New player me/n
Hello. I have been playing for 3 days and just found theese forums. there is alot I do not know about the game and someone might want to give me useful tips. I have moved on to Aschelon (present) and have failed the mission on the north wall where I am to scout the enemy camp twice now. I also got beaten to a pulp 3 times in the pvp arena and won once.
Name: Sovereign Chimera
Lvl (current): 6
Profession: Mesmer/Necro
Skill: Emphathy, Ether feast, Life siphon, Animate bone horror, Deathly swarm, Vampiric touch, Conjure phantasm, Blood renewal
Equipment: Mix of noob armor and the armor:30 stuff the armorer sells, mask of illusion+1, staff that does 3-17 chaos damage +50% skill regen and +5 energy
My tactic as far as I have any is to hit the enemy with high-damage stuff first while they are busy with my bone horror (deathly swarm and conjure phantasm) then go from weak health stealing (life siphon) to more agressive (vampiric touch). Ether feast and blood renewal is last resort stuff when Im about to die. Worked well in old Aschelon but dont seem to do enough damage now. I take the healer henchman with me so I never die but I cant get through some of the npc's healing spells.

@OP I suggest you get more into the PvE portion and start
doing the PvP portion after you get used to the mechanics and such of the game.

This might be helpful:
http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10274166
To make it short:
- you don't want to spread your attributes to thin. Especially at low levels - invest into only a few skill lines - even if that means you don't bring a full skillbar! Plus certain skills are equally useful with 0 investment in them (especially in low areas) as they would be with having a few points in them Stuff like Shatter Hex, interrupts, ...
- not sure what you mean by "I take the healer henchman with me so I never die but I cant get through some of the npc's healing spells."
Does that mean you ONLY take the Alesia an no other hench? Since if you are playing the game normally - you should always strive to have a full party.
- stay away from Vampiric Touch. It's insanely costly AND what's even worse - it puts in you melee range.
- I's stick with Conjure Phantasm and Empathy/Backfire the starting areas. Considering how little HP foes have - Conjure is REALLY sweet. Also you should have access to Energy Burn - which is quite sweet.
- IF you like playing around with minions - make a necro. Otherwise it's not worth it. (Although it IS insanely fun! )
- try to save up the money for better armour. Now do not buy EVERY armour - but you should get a new set around Ascalon, LA, the jungle (I always get a new set at Ventari's) and then Droks.
- but the last thing you REALLY want to keep in mind is to have fun.
If you are having fun and things are working - then screw what everyone here is saying. The game is to easy to not play it the way you want to. (IF you are playing with other people - then that's a different story. There you are part of a team - so you should cooperate.)
(One last thing - I have to say I REALLY envy you. I remember starting out and it was so freaking superb doing things that now I KNOW were simply wrong - but they were so fun! So try to stick to that feeling for as long as you can! )

Also, take as many henchmen as possible (dont take just the one if that is what you are doing)

Well, I dont know what shatter hex and interrupts is. Im spending most my points in Fast casting (to deal damage faster), Illusions (to do more damage with my Conjure phantasm) and Blood magic (for the same reason)

I read somewhere that a noob can only have a party of 2 and didnt test it, my bad.

I didnt understand any of that. But Im spending all my gold on cloth and armor as soon as I can make new gold. I have the armor=30 chest, gloves, pants and mask. The mask is also +1 illusion magic

Oh, I am having a blast
I was just asking for some advice. If I bring an extra warrior henchman and find the energy burn skill im sure I can beat that particular npc who keeps healing himself to full.

Shatter hex is a skill. [Shatter Hex]
You should get it in Ascalon. (That's s why I thought you might have it already.)
Interrupts are skills that interrupt foes action. There are many kinds - and you should be able to get your first one in Ascalon also. Quite fun. (Plus they help you understand the mechanics of the game more.)
Also stay away from fast casting for now. It's not a particularly useful line in PvE anyway - but now that you have VERY few points to spend it's even less useful. Just focus on lines that have skills that help you kill things.

Those are better options, yeah.

If you like bringing up minions - then going necro is the only way. (A primary necro that is.) But since you are lazy () - you should just dump the Animate skill.

You'll understand as you progress.
You have armour traders in many places in the game. As you progress, you'll want to buy better armour so that you'll take less damage (from certain sources). All I am suggesting to you is to prioritize buying new armour (instead of stuff like better weapons or dye or something ). Having armour suitable for the area you are playing in - makes the game easier.
What I also suggested is NOT to buy armour at every chance you get. Since sometimes the difference in armour is so minimal that you'll only be wasting money.
And that is way I suggested you buy a full set of armour in Ascalon, LA (which stands for Lion's Arch), Ventari's Refugee, and Droknar's Forge.
I always feel that these places give you the most value for your money.

Going to the wiki is good. If you have a question about one skill and you look it up on the wiki, you can spend a good half hour just clicking on links to get yourself a lot more familiar with the game. The link to the wiki that I posted is not the same wiki as Silverkin posted. It's the unofficial wiki that we've had before GW established their own wiki, which you can access quickly in game with F11.
As far as your OP, it looks like you should have picked up Necromancer instead of Mesmer, as that seems like it would fit your playstyle better. I don't believe Fast Casting is going to do you much good at an early stage. The Mesmer doesn't become utilized until you know a lot about the game.
When you're talking about not being able to make it through all of the opponents healing, I'm wondering if you're only taking the healer henchmen or what. You can carry three henchmen to fill your party limit of four until you get to the Shiverpeaks. You'll probably want to be taking the Elementalist and Warrior henchmen.

I did as Shayre suggested and made a Necro primary instead. Much more fun actually. Discussion continued here
